Put the "To-Do List" Aside

"Time in prayer makes you even more dependent on God because you don't have as much time to get things done. Every minute spent in prayer is one less minute where you can be doing something 'productive.' So the act of praying means that you have to rely more on God."

-Paul E. Miller, A Praying Life
Please see my previous post on this book here.

Does anyone else battle between task-orientation and God-orientation?

Like everyone else in this Westernized, fast-paced world, I have a long list of things to do. It's constantly in my head, and I worry about fitting it in.

Spending time in prayer and Bible study has to be more important. If I make the choice to put tasks above God, then I am not trusting the Lord. I am saying that I can do this life on my own.

And I can't do it on my own.

Put the to-do list aside, read scripture, and pray.
(Here's a helpful hint: when you start praying, tell God about your to-do list, and ask him to help you get things done today! Just see what happens!)

  1. I don't understand. . .why do you worry about fitting in? You always seemed to be your own person, so I guess I don't understand that. I've never wanted to fit in :: shrugs :: so I am a little out of seeing that perspective. perhaps you can share with me so I can understand and perhaps encourage you.

I agree with you about spending time in prayer and in Bible study!!! I like this entry! ^_^

  2. Ohhh no, no - not "fitting in" but "fitting it in"-- like, fitting in all the tasks I need to do in one day.

  3. UGH. That was my genuine reaction to the opening quote. Cause it's true. And I don't like it. I am so time-conscious these days, I'm constantly dancing that line of trying to fit as many things in before the boys wake up, that to take my eyes off the clock and my mind off the tasks takes a supernatural intervention of the Holy Spirit. Lord, you must increase and I must decrease.

  4. Evie, I want you to borrow "A Praying Life" when I come home. I think you'll really enjoy it and find practical insights.

Living in such a way that people see the kingdom of heaven on earth is our purpose. The Bible is truth. As stressful as it is, I've learned that I have to put the Lord before it all (but I don't always do it!). I WILL say that the days I sincerely put considerable time aside to be with God, he surprises me in productivity for the day. It's not a formula, but it is a blessing. God's showing me that he'll provide what I need for that day.

For instance, yesterday and today I really wasn't sure about how to get all my reading and chores done, while having time to exercise and sleep. But the first thing I do when I pray is tell God about what I want to accomplish, and for help in getting things done that day. Both yesterday and today, he provided an extra half hour off from classes. It's pretty incredible. I got EVERY SINGLE THING done that I wanted to get done yesterday.

Sorry, this is so long winded, but it's something I"m personally experiencing with God right now. I want everyone to experience these kinds of blessings! :)
